2. Acknowledged the possibility that a Power beyond ourselves can bring us back to sanity
Embracing the belief in a power greater than ourselves as the key to restoring sanity becomes more straightforward when we realize that Step Two doesn't require us to define or comprehend this power. It simply asks us to accept that we alone cannot achieve sanity. To attain any semblance of sanity in our lives, we need a power beyond our own.
Step One should have highlighted that our attempts to create a rational and sane life have consistently failed. A good sponsor can help us recognize the madness in our thoughts and actions. Without a power greater than ourselves, we will continue to falter in our pursuit of a sane life. Be it earning a living, repairing relationships, or quitting harmful habits, without this power, achieving sanity remains elusive. In its absence, life will persist as a cycle of drama, failure, and blaming others.
What prevents us from embracing God? It’s our irrational biases. We presume to know God’s nature, what He should do for us, and what He won't. Recognizing that our preconceived notions about God are likely flawed is crucial for progress.
The Big Book assures us that “the awareness of my belief will manifest” as we progress through the steps. This implies that as we engage with these steps, God will gradually unveil His power to us. Our understanding of God will evolve as we document inventories, make amends, practice meditation, and more.
If this step feels challenging, try the Set Aside Prayer: “God, please help me release all my assumptions about You, the steps, and my own sanity. Guide me towards truth for an open mind and new experiences.”
And remember, the assurance of restored sanity comes only by Step Ten. Keep pressing forward!
