At Impact Recovery Center, we understand the importance of AA’s three legacies — Recovery, Unity, and Service — which are symbolized by the Triangle inside the Circle & Triangle emblem. This symbol has spiritual origins and signifies the unity of Mind, Body, and Spirit. Our challenges have been not only mental and physical but also spiritual. We offer a program targeting these three aspects to address a three-fold illness. Engaging in activities across all these areas leads to recovery and the achievement of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
The Circle & Triangle is the solution to addiction and alcoholism, offering a three-part remedy (Recovery, Unity, and Service) for our severe three-part illness (Physical, Mental, and Spiritual). Initially, we establish our solution on the Triangle's foundation, focusing on personal work with the first Eleven Steps — RECOVERY. This area addresses the mental aspect of our illness. Through recovery, our thoughts are transformed, our words evolve, our actions shift, our character is reshaped, and our lives are reborn.
Next, we consider the Triangle's left side, UNITY. Unity is found within the Twelve Step fellowships among other addicts and alcoholics. These meetings and fellowship are where we engage physically, often marking the initial healing stage. Fellowship with those facing similar issues is crucial, yet the true addict and alcoholic must delve deeper. Do they have a home group in a Twelve Step fellowship? Do they routinely attend this group and its Group Conscience meetings? Are they active in their home group? Do they maintain strong connections with fellow members? Most critically, do they have four to six individuals with whom they are completely transparent? Concurrently engaging in these practices significantly enhances their experience with Unity.
Lastly, the Triangle's right side is SERVICE, found in sharing the message (the lifestyle outlined in the initial 164 pages of The Big Book) with others, especially those still struggling with addiction. At Impact Recovery Center, we hold that the essence of Service is meaningful work, one addict helping another or one alcoholic assisting another. Recovery empowers us to help others, a crucial aspect for enduring recovery.
We acknowledge that service work in fellowships — organizing meetings, cleaning, welcoming newcomers, holding service positions at group and area levels, etc. — is essential for genuine addicts or alcoholics. However, focusing exclusively on this type of service work places Recovery on a service level, leaning too heavily on the fellowship and insufficiently on God. As a wise individual once noted, “the fellowship is like a warm bath, it doesn’t last for long.” Without expanding their spiritual lives through work and self-sacrifice for others, addicts and alcoholics may not endure life's inevitable challenges and downturns. This symbol helps us assess where our residents are in the program and how they’re progressing.
Program = Engaging in the Steps (Recovery/Mind) + Fellowship/Home Group/Accountability (Unity/Body) + Guiding Others through the Steps (Service/Spirit) >>>> Where do we stand in the Program?
Those who actively engage in all three areas experience completeness, peace, serenity, and — most crucially — a state of recovery (not a cure).
